For many years now it has become more apparent that nutrition played an important role in the life of a drug addict, alcoholic, methadone patient or other that might be chemically imbalanced. Today many are looking for answers to help solve the problem of nutritional deficiencies in alcoholics, drug addicts and methadone treatment patients. This search was pioneered by a group of doctors who developed a vitamin mineral supplement to help people with drug problems. Today more people are paying attention to this problem with their clients whom are in treatment. In many cases it is being added to their treatment plans. The big problem then is what course of action needs to be taken to positively affect a change in their client’s health and nutrition.

Many times the course of action to address the problem is to tell the person to start taking a “good” vitamin. Maybe they tell them to go to a health food store and try some specific product that might give them some relief. This can be expensive road to follow, trying to find the right vitamin supplement for each case. Vitamin B in various forms is most often recommended for low energy but that is just one issue. Then people are told another product to help other issues (Something for this and something else for that.). The result is that there is no real change because the treatment is not complete. The problems persist and sometimes even worsen. The person gives up and becomes skeptic towards the benefit of health and nutritional supplements.

The other problem is that because of their problem they expect and want instantaneous gratification. They don’t realize that the problem developed over a period of time usually a long time. Most vitamin and mineral supplements are developed for “normal” people (whatever that is). They may not even work for those people, much less work for people with specific problems such as drug and alcohol problems and people under going methadone treatment or maintenance. Sometimes in methadone treatment clients experience the methadone side effects of extreme constipation, sugar craving, low energy and heavy sweating. The other problem is people with drug and alcohol problems are used to “feeling” something. This is not generally the case with most of the products they take. If they do feel the product it usually a short lived high, burst of energy or something of that nature. Then comes the let down.

Now there are Vitamin supplements developed for addicts and those inn various treatments. The active principles used in developing this product get the nutrient to the cellular level. If the nutrient never reaches the cellular level then the body doesn’t benefit from the nutrient. The two active principles are chelation and an integrated antioxidant system. Chelated products are easily absorbed in the body while retaining their nutritional properties as you would expect from their natural sources. The body needs antioxidants to inactivate or minimize the effects free radicals or Oxidants. Although beta carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E are commonly taken as antioxidants, they may be harmful if taken inappropriately. However when processed corectly they will be in the form that is used by the body to do what antioxidants are supposed to do in the body.

When a product is designed properly and for a specific purpose it has a much better chance of doing what it supposed do. If given the appropriate nutrients in a form the body needs and can use, the body will then do what it is supposed to do, be healthy. Then you will function like you were designed to.

It’s a purely-synthetic and highly-addictive drug that has wrecked lives all throughout the globe. Meth (methamphetamine) – also known as ‘crystal’ in the United States, ‘yaba’ in Thailand and ‘shabu’ in the Philippines – is abused by a wide cross-section of society, from blue collared workers to corporate types, causing unimaginable costs to society in general.

It’s more dangerous than the highly potent cocaine even. Dr. Michael Abrams of Broadlawn Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, says Meth ‘is the most malignant, addictive drug known to mankind.’ He explains that the body has enzymes that break down cocaine, which is basically derived from coca leaves, but these enzymes are powerless with methamphetamine.

Dealing with persons addicted to this drug is not at all easy. Affected people are both physiologically and psychologically changed. Among the dangerous physical effects of meth use are increased blood pressure and breathing rates, stomach cramps, cardiac arrhythmia, insomnia, paranoia, hallucinations, stroke and even death.

A lot of meth-dependent individuals have tried to get rid of the habit unsuccessfully. It’s hard to wake up one morning, say ‘no’ to it and forget about it. Curing an addiction just doesn’t work that way. Treatment should be done step by step and in a long term, each step being quite relevant to the one before it.

There’s no pill that can flush out all the settled harmful substance in your system. It takes a lot of determination on your part and the informed persistence of the people who are trying to help you overcome your dependence. Withdrawal symptoms include depression and other forms of psychological impairment that may last for several months.

While dealing with addiction appropriately was a major concern the world over a long time ago, several organizations have done significant efforts that effectively help sufferers to overcome their cravings. There is no other best way to solve it but to send meth dependents to drug rehabilitation centers.

At drug rehab facilities, people get a holistic treatment for their problems. In there, they will be given honest and caring support so that these affected ones will find their way back towards their happy and normal lives. The victims will be staying in the drug treatment facility for as long as they still show strong cravings for it.

Recovery from meth dependence is a possibility, but the withdrawal period can be tough on the patient and there is a possibility for relapse. While some prosperous nations have numbers of drug rehabilitation centers, poor ones don’t. That is why this global problem has not been significantly dealt with. Worse, the number of meth addicts continues to rise.

Ultimately, meth addiction treatment relies on the support of the sufferer’s family and loved ones. It’s basically a social concern that needs a social solution. Knowing the reasons and circumstances that led the person to methamphetamine dependence and taking these away from his environment during and after the rehab period will be a great help.

The Way Out offers information about drug and alcohol recovery programs, referral service, and facts about substances, treatment, and consulting options. Without placing blame or judgment, the site first provides rehabilitation and recovery resources. The database located on the site shows the user what to look for in a center, as well as providing an anonymous information sheet that refers the user to local facilities for treatment options. This referral is based on the type of services and addiction that the center offers, the clientele treated at the center, time frame, costs and insurance and inpatient and outpatient options.

In addition, The Way Out offers detailed information about the different treatment options for rehabilitation and recovery. The most updated details on different options such as health spas, 30- and 90- day treatment plans, sober living homes, and co-dependency facilities, the user can obtain information about these options in order to make informed decisions about their care. Additionally, the site offers information about different addictive substances, including type of drug, effects, reasons for abuse, and specific problems associated with each substance. Located in an easy to click menu, this information is updated with new research.

The bottom of the page offers a facility finder, easily organized by state and then geographic area. 10 states are listed as primarily focused by The Way Out, however, the anonymous information sheet also connects potential patients with other facilities that are not directly related to the site. The menu bar at the top of the site explains the focus of the organization, information about the services provided, and the founder and recovery coach. This explains that The Way Out is a placement firm that connects potential patients with recovery facilities free of charge. Additional information is provided about the type of treatment programs and a more comprehensive list is offered of typical additions, including eating disorders and video game addictions.

Tips to know before checking into any facility are also offered. Things like “you only get what you put in”, offer the patient information to create the right mind frame before checking into any facility.

Addiction types and resource links offer more information to the site’s users, as well as connecting the users to other information and to answer additional questions. Overall, The Way Out offers a comprehensive site where the questions a user may have about all types of addiction and recovery are addressed, non-biased information is presented, and recovery options are offered to bring the user to the most immediate and appropriate treatment option.

It is very bad luck for a child to be born into an alcoholic family that has one alcoholic parent. However, it is truly the worst luck to have two alcoholic parents.

As a psychiatrist that specializes in addiction, this is not an uncommon scenario. Not only are their children at twice the genetic risk of developing an alcohol problem, the chance of both alcoholic parents remaining clean and sober is not very high.

Here is a case from my psychiatric practice:

M.F. and S.V. met in college. At that time, every one around them was drinking and using drugs so that their drug and alcohol use did not stand out. However, they are both thirty years old now and have a son in 8th grade and a daughter in 4th grade. M.F. and his wife S.V. have continued drinking excessively with no significant periods of sobriety (except S.V. during her pregnancies).

M.F. is a successful entrepreneur and his wife is a stay at home mom. They go out with friends almost every night and basically use and abuse alcohol. M.F. decided to get a psychiatric evaluation because he feels depressed and anxious over his financial difficulties. His formerly successful business took a downturn during the tough economic times of the last several years.

I prescribed a medication to prevent alcohol withdrawal and explained that an antidepressant would not work for his depression if he continued his alcohol abuse. I explained that alcohol is a central nervous system depressant and actually causes depression.

He committed to staying clean and sober for 8 weeks, but would not agree to go to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. He just wanted to try to quit drinking alcohol for several months to see if he could do it.

M.F.’s mood improved significantly after 4 weeks on an antidepressant medication. He had minimal cravings for alcohol (I put him on an anti craving medication as well). He was much more much effective at work and faced problems as they arose. He said he felt on top of his game.

However, his home life was stained. He no longer drank alcohol when he and his wife went out to dinner with friends. His alcoholic wife continued to get drunk right in front of him. Many times, he often left early without her or chose to stay at home with their children.

His alcoholic wife continued her alcoholic behavior. She drank nightly with friends and slept a good part of the day. On several occasions when he was out with her, he almost had an alcohol relapse. He felt angry and resentful watching her drink.

M.F. tells me he is very judgmental toward his alcoholic wife even though he has had a significant alcohol problem himself for so many years. Now that he is clean and sober, he realizes that his wife spends her time either abusing alcohol or suffering the effects of alcohol. She barely participates in the family other than getting their children to and from school. The children have essentially been raising themselves.

Conversely, his alcoholic wife complains to him that he is acting self- righteous about quitting drinking alcohol even though he has been clean and sober for such a short time. M.F. confides in me he is thinking about divorce unless his wife chooses to quit drinking alcohol.

This case illustrates the strain on an alcoholic family when either the alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife begins recovery before the other one follows suit. The spouse in alcoholic recovery quickly sees the tremendous impact of alcoholic behavior on the family and is no longer as tolerant or supportive of his/her addicted spouse.

In my 21 years of practice, the best scenario is for both alcoholic spouses to be recovery together. If one of the alcoholic spouses refuses to quit drinking alcohol or will not consider any alcohol treatment options the chance of the alcoholic family staying together is very slim. Families Anonymous is an excellent 12 step program to help alcoholic families.

Heroin use among young folks has been climbing at alarming rates over the past few years. Heroin is not just a drug found on skid row; instead it is right in almost every school system, with more and more young students experiencing heroin withdrawals requiring a need for new treatments.

Traditional treatments have not shown much success in getting patients free from the heroin. Mainly Methadone treatment is used to relieve heroin withdrawals but has some pitfalls that some of the newer medications overcome. Methadone is a full opiate and basically just a switch from an illegal drug to one that is legal and actually harder to get off of than heroin itself. Methadone is also very tightly regulated by the government and has a high abuse potential as well as overdose deaths. It can only be dispensed at government regulated clinics and patients must report to the clinic every day to receive their dose. Sometimes patients must travel many miles to get to a clinic because there are few clinics around.

Some newer treatments have successfully overcome some of the negative issues associated with methadone. Suboxone, sometimes referred to as the “miracle drug” has been very successful in relieving withdrawal symptoms of heroin and getting patients free from the grips of their addiction. Within just a few weeks patients begin tapering the suboxone and finally get off of the suboxone without experiencing any withdrawals and becoming completely drug free. Suboxone can be administered by a physician and taken home by the patient. This allows the patient to have more flexibility and not be tied to a clinic. It also enables those who cannot get to a methadone clinic to receive treatment. Because Suboxone has an ingredient that will cause severe withdrawals if it is abused there is a smaller likelihood of it being abused and because it is only a partial opiate overdose does not occur if it is abused.

Methadone has been around for some time and is still used widely. For some patients it is still is the best treatment and it all depends upon the patient and their professional who is helping them. However it is good that there are other options to deal with the relief of heroin withdrawals with newer treatments.

Detox from Benzodiazepine or anti-anxiety benzo drugs such as: paxil, atavan, xanax, valium and other benzo’s at integrative medical benzodiazepine detox center is strongly suggested for people having difficulties withdrawing under medical doctors supervision. Detox from benzo’s is safely and smoothly done in weeks if integrative medicine & nutrition is used in detox.

Caution: Benzo detox takes years when incorrect detox protocol is filling in place of correct detox methods and processes. Traditional medical practice is ignorant of the latest integrated medical techniques in benzo detox. Benzodiazepine detox difficulties resolved rapidly at integrative medical / specialized detox centers.

Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Symptoms Commonly Resolved at Integrative Medical Facilities

* sleeplessness, insomnia

* panic attacks, shortness of breath and rapid heart rate

* apparent bipolar symptoms

* inability to eat, stomach troubles

* anxiety stomach, nervous stomach

* amplified social phobia’s resulting from years of benzo’s

* brain zaps

* despair even breakdowns during withdrawal

* fear or despair

* believing yourself to be a drug addict or having a ‘benzo deficiency’

* skin crawling or itching

* there are others . . .

Benzodiazepine Detox Centers

Are medical detox facilities the same?

Do specialized benzodiazepine detox centers exist?

Why doesn’t every medical detox facility know how to smoothly withdraw people from benzodiazepine drugs?

Facts About Benzodiazepine Detox

1. Medical Detox facilities are not the same.

Typical medical detox facilities even those med detox facilities connected to drug rehab centers for the wealthy, don’t have knowledge or expertise in detoxing people having difficulties coming off of benzo’s. If difficulties arise, the benzo is only switched to a different drug in the hope the person will be healthier at a later time.

2. Specialized Benzodiazepine Detox Centers exist.

Benzo detox centers that have specialized protocol and experience with benzo detox exist in the US in very small and limited numbers.

A small sample of integrative detox centers are Novus in FL, USA and Agora in BC, Canada. Other integrative detox centers exist and can be found by a google search or contacting the author of this article.

How Benzo Addiction Skyrocketed in the US & Canada

The major target for benzo sales in the 1960′s was housewives. ‘Mothers little helper’ was born in the form of a benzo pill.

When then President Bush removed restrictions on pharmaceutical companies to market drugs directly to the public on TV and media, massive pharmaceutical drug addiction over took US and Canada.

The major target of benzodiazepine drug sales in 1990′s and 2000′s were women. Women are most likely to ask for and become dependent to benzo’s after first getting them from their doctor. Often women only take the drug as prescribed but after a little as 6 weeks or between 6 months to 2 years, the drug can create dependencies in both women and men. Now men are just as likely to fall victim to benzo dependency.

* Nervous or anxious conditions are intensified and made worse by benzo drugs

* Withdrawing or reducing benzo amounts intensifies problems to near paralyzing levels

* Brain ‘zaps’ scare people into returning back onto benzo’s and confirm their dependency

3. Many medical detox facilities don’t know how to properly and smoothly detox people from benzo’s.

Understanding the science behind benzo activity, benzo damage and longer term benzo effects are still being discovered. Honest medical science is usually 50 years ahead of medical practice. This means we have about 45 years of waiting until effective and comfortable benzodiazapine detox methodologies enjoy common knowledge and are in practice by average medical detox facilities.

Unless you want to wait another 45 years, I suggest you look into integrative medical detox facilities. We’ve found several in the USA, each has very different amenities and qualifications. Many clients were desperate as no other treatments had worked before. I’ve sent dozens of clients to select centers and all have reported a smooth and pleasant detox.

If you are addicted to opiates of some sort, such as prescription pain pills or street drugs like heroin, then you should know some things about opiate treatment in general before you try to get clean. Certainly you will want to make a huge effort to get clean as soon as possible, but you want to do it in a way that will lead you to lasting recovery. It does not do much good to clean up, only to stumble into a relapse shortly thereafter.

The preferred method of getting clean from opiates for most people is to check into a drug rehab. This is ideal for a number of reasons. First of all, if you do anything else, you are going to be on the outside and temptation to relapse will be much greater. In a rehab setting you will not have quick access to drugs, so it is going to be much easier for you to stay clean for a few weeks.

Second of all, if you go to inpatient rehab, you will have support from other people who are going through the same struggle you are. This is a much bigger help than most people anticipate, and can really make a huge difference. Finally, one of the biggest pluses for going to rehab is that they will be able to give you a medical detox, in which you will probably be given medication that will seriously curtail your withdrawal symptoms. This alone should be worth the price of admission for almost any opiate addict who is struggling to get clean.

Methamphetamine is commonly known as “speed” or “meth.” It is a white and odourless crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water. The drug was developed early in this century from its parent drug, amphetamine, and was used originally in nasal decongestants, bronchial inhalers and other related products. Like amphetamine, it causes increased activity, decreased appetite, and a general sense of well-being. Meth is a highly addictive substance, and is widely abused among our youth. It has become Meth addiction is a serious problem and often has very serious consequences.

Treatments for meth addictions range from method to method. The primary treatment for methamphetamine addictions is an intensive outpatient program that is designed to treat the patient’s dysphoira, paranoia, psychosis and agitation. Successful meth treatment requires the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy. This approach prepares the addict for life-long recovery. Although recovering from meth addiction is challenging, it is not impossible. With determination and support the addiction can be beat.

Treatment for meth overdoses require certain protocols in the emergency room. Becasue hyperthermia(overheating) and convulsions are common and often fatal, ER treatment focuses on the immediate physical symptoms. Overdose patients are cooled off in ice baths, and anticonvulsant drugs may also be administered.

Currently there are no pharmacutical treatments for addiction. How ever, often meth addiction is followed by depression, therefore the use of some anti-depressant medications can be helpful in users who recently have become abstinent. Shock therapy is a outdated form of addiction treatment, and was discontinued becasue it was found to have more negitive effects than positive.

In conclusion, meth addiction is one of the most serious, hardest to recover from and harmful addictions there is. Treatment for meth addictions should be taken seriously and professional help should be found. The first step to addiction recovery is admitting to yourself you have the problem. The second is doing something about it. If you or a loved one has an addiction to meth, please use our sites as a useful guide to your addiction recovery.

What Is The Cause of Alcoholism Alcohol Abuse

Alcoholism affects hundreds of thousands of people all over the world and is the cause of many deaths. There are many differing views on Alcoholism Alcohol abuse however one thing is certain, as of yet we do not know what causes alcoholism alcohol abuse.

I know from personal experience that Alcoholism can be treated but this can only happen if the Alcoholic admits and accepts they have a problem and wants to stop. I suffered from Alcoholism alcohol abuse for many years and eventually there came a point in my life when I simply could not do this to myself any longer, I had reached a point in my life where I knew something had to change, and alcoholism alcohol abuse was slowly but surely stripping me of everything.

I am a recovering Alcoholic and I found recovery and have not taken a drink or wanted to take a drink for many years. Today I live a happy and contented life, alcohol no longer plays a part in my life and it rarely crosses my mind which is a miracle. There was a time when my whole life was consumed by Alcohol and I was interested in nothing else.

I have read many books on Alcoholism and alcohol abuse, I was trying to find answers, why could I not drink like other people, why could I not just have a drink and stop. I never found the complete answer and neither have the doctors or consultants; alcoholism alcohol abuse to this day remains a bit of a mystery. What I did find out was that talking to other alcoholics I felt some kind of connection, I knew they understood me and there were some definite traits that seemed to pop up.

I am talking from experience when I say one Alcoholic talking to another can be of great help, they have been through the same hell as I have and felt the same way. When I talk to another alcoholic I feel they know me, they understand me and I feel I am no longer alone. Professional people in the addiction field can be helpful and they can provide guidance to any person suffering from Alcoholism alcohol abuse but please don’t under estimate the power of one recovering Alcoholic talking to another.

So, have we answered the question what is the causes of alcoholism alcohol abuse? No we have not and there is still much research to be done before we can answer that. However, even if we don’t have all the answers we know for certain that any Alcoholic who wants to stop drinking can as long as they admit and accept they have a problem.

There are many recovery methods available, I found recovery from alcoholism alcohol abuse by means of a 12 step program but this is not for everybody and there are many alternative methods available. I hope this article gives you hope, I have been sober for many years and I was a hopeless Alcoholic. Recovery is possible if you want it.

Steve is a recovering Alcoholic who has not taken a drink or wanted to take a drink for many years. He found Recovery and now lives a happy and contented life and wishes to help others recover for Alcoholism.
Heroin is one the most addictive drugs in the world. For this reason, it can be difficult to get lasting recovery. However, recovery is possible. Here, we will take a look at some of the things that need to be done to get a successful heroin treatment.

b>1. Enter into a solid detox program.

The first step of any treatment program will be to help get the body to adjust without the impact of drugs. This can be a difficult time for addicts who will go through a series of withdrawal symptoms which range from nausea to headaches. However, this process is important because it teaches the person they can live without heroin.

2. Join an on-site drug treatment center.

It is very important that the patient enter a on-site facility where they can be monitored by trained professionals 24/7. This is important because it will help ensure the person stays away from drugs and is given the opportunity to learn what to do to help cope with cravings or bad environments. This can include a wide variety of activities including learning exercises, group discussions, and one on one sessions with a doctor and psychiatrist. One key here is to ensure the person joins a program for at least 90 days in length. Research indicates this time frame is very important to increase the odds of getting lasting recovery.

3. Build a support network and solid follow-up program.

After the person is released from the drug treatment center, it is important that he/she continue to build up his/her support group and continue to meet with counselors. This is very important for the person to continue to grow without drugs and prevent any future relapse. The format of this section will vary depending on the person’s individual issues and progress. Since heroin is a very addictive drug, extra measures should be put in place to keep the person from any future relapse. This can include additional meetings with counselors, group out patient meetings, or even educational courses designed to improve the skills of the patient.

Although a heroin treatment may not be effective for everyone, it is helped many people lead a more productive life. In addition, some are able to overcome their addictions and be an example for others.
