How to Stop Drinking Quickly
January 26th, 2009 Filed under: Alcoholic Recovery — Addiction Recovery AuthorMost of the people who decided to stop drinking, quit drinking without any outside help. They simply make up their minds to stop or modify their life patterns. Many people who have a problem with alcohol are not alcoholics.
Daily-drinkers are those who have become chemically dependent upon alcohol. Such a drinker may need initial medical assistant to get through the detoxification period, but may be able to remain sober after detox without further assistance. If you have decided, for whatever reason, that you want to stop drinking, please pay attention to the bellow suggestions.
First, avoid drinking. If saying no to alcohol makes you feel uncomfortable in front of people you know, blame your parents or another adult for your refusal. Saying, “My parents are coming to pick me up soon,” “I already got in major trouble for drinking once, I can’t do it again,” or “my coach would kill me,” can make saying no a bit easier for some.
Second, find support. Keep in mind that the sooner a person gets help, the better are his or her chances for a successful recovery. It’s good to share your feelings with a friend, but it’s equally important to talk to an adult you trust, maybe a priest.
Third, talk to your doctor. If you think you have a drinking problem, get help as soon as possible. The best approach is to talk to your doctor.
Fourth, have a physical examination. You might be given a physical examination. If your health care professional concludes that you may be dependent on alcohol, he or she may recommend that you see a specialist in diagnosing and treating alcoholism.
Fifth, have a treatment. Based on your doctor’s assessment of the severity of your problem, your treatment could involve several phases. If you have become “chemically dependent” upon alcohol, treatment may include detoxification; taking doctor-prescribed medications, to help prevent a return to drinking once drinking has stopped; and individual and/or group counseling.
