The Characteristics of Sexual Addiction

There are a few recognizable associations in the United States that do not see sex addiction being a mental illness such as the American Psychiatric Association. Due to this apparent fact, there are no authorized analytical criteria being implemented for this illness. This particular association, however, has specific categorization that sexual addiction treatment centers use to help them to understand this kind of disorder.

Sexual addiction disorder consists of various illegal activities and vulnerabilities that include a grownup’s sexual appeal to children; sexual enthusiasm created by looking at a person unsuspectingly; exposing private parts to others; sexual enthusiasm from the threat of pain or infliction of pain; sexual enthusiasm from apparel that belongs to the opposite sex and sexual enthusiasm from fondling someone who is not interested.

All of these kinds of behaviors are categorized by repeated, concentrated arousal, fantasies, and deep urges that involve violating someone’s privacy and body and sometimes, only involve the addict in masturbation. Masturbation tends to be an obsessive behavior and can create guilt, shame and embarrassment for the person. It can look quite harmless, but if the person graduates to more strange behavior and thought, it can turn to them doing harm to someone else, such as rape or molestation. This happens when they are unable to fulfill their initial desire.

Sexual addiction treatment centers are there to assist the personal clinically and therapeutically to understand this illness and make amends to their behavior. Clinical research will take place of the subject to get a better understanding if this is an illness or not. Therapeutic assistance will be given to enable the person to get to the bottom of the situation and find reasons and solutions to the problem.

Defining this kind of dependency is not easy for professionals, but studies have proven that a sex addict is someone that engages in sexual activities with more than one partner with the intension of fulfilling a desire and a fantasy. It is a preoccupation and a constant craving for sex. It is the thought of sex every second of the day in such a way that the person becomes unproductive and will neglect their obligations to family and employer. They will constantly engage in this behavior whether there are negative connotations to it or not. They will go out of their way to spend money or risk their lives to visit prostitution houses. If they don’t fulfill this desire in a day, it will cause them extreme irritability.

If you identify that a loved one has a sexual addiction issue, these initial criteria will help you to find sexual addiction treatment centers that cater to these kinds of symptoms, signs and behaviors. You will be able to find the one that is best for your loved one. The goal of most of these treatment programs is to get the person to talk about their past experiences such as child abuse or molestation. Once the person opens up to the therapist, there will be a breakthrough and the therapist will be able to construct a plan that is helpful to that particular person.

I’m not sure that sex addiction disorder is only played out in illegal activity. I think there are many people who fall under the sex addict label whose acts are all perfectly legal, albeit unhealthy emotionally, mentally, spiritually and physically. In fact, I would say the majority of sex addicts operate within legal bounds.

I’ve been reading the book “Free Sex. Expensive Therapy” http://judithsage.com/book.html by Judith SagĂ© and I think it’s a perfect example of the creation of, and recovery from, sex addiction, told from the perspective of a female sex addict. I highly recommend it as an authentic look into the disorder and an inspiring example of the way out.
