Breaking Bad Habits – 4 Tips to Drop ‘Em All!

There isn’t anyone who wouldn’t like to know more about breaking bad habits. We all have them.

Whether it’s as innocent as tapping your foot when you’re nervous, or as ignorant and sad as knowingly shaving years off your life by sucking down cigarette after cigarette, a bad habit is simply something you do but would love to stop!

Luckily, there isn’t any addiction on Earth that hasn’t been beaten by someone, somewhere. You might just need a little help, so here are 4 tips to stop bad habits, and start some great ones!

Breaking Bad Habits

  1. Who’s to blame? The first step is much like your first AA meeting: Admit you have a problem, and find out why you do this thing you want to stop. Do you like the taste? Does it make you feel better? Is it your only way to fill time?
  2. See the future you. Envision yourself already having broken your bad habit. Thing about all the benefits you will enjoy: more money, more time, better health. The more you see just how great life can be, the more you will want to change for the better.
  3. Polly want a cracker? If you’re not the cold-turkey, just-rip-it-off type, then set small goals and ease into your new routine. Every time you surpass one of your milestones, reward yourself with something you enjoy. This will help your brain associate your new behavior with feelings of pleasure and excitement. But, be smart about it. Certainly don’t reward your 30 days sober with a bottle of Jack Daniels!
  4. Out with the old, in with the new. One of the hardest things about breaking a bad habit is the feeling of losing something in the process. Even if you know it’s ridiculous, you may feel a hole where that thing used to be. So, fill it with a new healthy and exciting habit such as exercising or sight-seeing.

Follow these simple guidelines, and your newest addiction will be breaking bad habits!

This is a good blog post in my opinion because it shows me that we all have bad habits. I guess I’m just not willing to give up the cigarette. Hopefully someday. For now I’m still working on the obsessions of mood and mind altering chemicals.
