Addiction - Escaping The Prison
April 28th, 2008First things first, if you do not want to be helped then no matter how good peoples’ intentions are to help, it won’t help any. It is likely to more damage than good and if you actually manage to force someone in to rehab the chances of them re-offending is enormous.
This goes for everyone, not only for those who are addicted to whatever it maybe. People can even been
Being addicted means you believe in your heart and every single fiber of your being that there is no possible way to live without whatever it is you are addicted to. The object of your addiction can be anything from the common addictions like alcohol, drugs, cigarettes to less common known ones like people and emotions.
The thing with addiction is that you don’t actually realize that you are addicted. Can you imagine being
thrown in jail and not knowing why? Well that’s what you have effectively done to yourself, blindly thrown yourself in prison and then unwittingly given your addiction the key to freedom.
Denial best friend and nobody can even begin to understand you. It seems as if the whole world is picking on you. And then when/if you finally do become aware of your addiction you feel that you can’t break it. Well at least that is how I felt.
Want know what the number one reason that stops people from breaking their addiction and becoming addicted in the first place?
FEAR
How do you overcome fear? Well it certainly isn’t scare tactics they never work over the long term. That may work for the short term but evidence suggests the exact opposite is true. So, what is the solution? There is no one solution because we as humans are different but here are just a few tips: Get help to build your confidence and belief in yourself, this could be in the form of therapy or self-help home courses. The point is to ask for and seek help. Admitting to yourself that you are scared can be liberating in itself because many addicts don’t realize they are actually scared let alone know what they fear.
The real truth is you don’t need any of those self-help courses, psychiatrists or psychologists they just tell you what you already know.
But before you go calling the police on me, please, please, please do not get me wrong they all have value and they absolutely do help people overcome their addictions. What I mean is that in the end there is only you left to take responsibility for what has happened to you.
Some people think they don’t need any help to start off with, while that maybe true, it is far easier to do it when you have someone to support you. Like the song says — somebody to lean on –. The irony of this is I did it all by myself, I literally woke up one day and said to myself, screw this, I will never ever touch another joint in my life. That was five years ago. It’s coming up to two years after breaking a 22 year smoking addiction. So ask yourself this: Who would you take advice from? Someone who has never taken anything in their life and never known what addiction is or from a person who has been through hell and knows exactly what it feels like to overcome the biggest obstacle you will ever face.
After you have gone through hundreds maybe even thousands of dollars worth of courses that in the end it was you all along. I do believe however that no amount of money is wasted if it is for your development.
There is a massive misconception that people who are addicts are dumb, stupid or have a weak mind and don’t know what they are doing to themselves. At this point I would really love to swear. You and I both know there is no bigger lie. The truth is that you will find that it is the most head strong people who are addicted. People who are addicted hate it when they are told what to do, when to do it and how they should do it.
It truly is not as hard to overcome an addiction as you think. It’s about using what you already have inside you, the strength that you were born with and utilizing that. The hard bit is realizing you already have that strength. If you do need help I offer you my services with all my heart and soul I know how lonely it can feel.
