Addiction Treatment For Alcoholic Smokers

November 28th, 2007

Consumption of alcohol and tobacco are two most dreaded addictions causing a major global health impact. In most cases, there exists an association between alcohol and tobacco use. According to available research data, around 80-95 percent consumers of alcohol are also the biggest consumers of tobacco. Combination of both the habits causes a far greater damage to the health of an individual than single form of addiction.

Why do people need to smoke while consuming alcohol? Quite a number of postulates and assumptions exist on this issue. Some consider that smoking increases the absorption, distribution and elimination of alcohol from the body. Some others have the opinion that smoking and alcohol complement each other in increasing the desired effects and decrease the toxic and unpleasant reactions. However, none of these postulates have been convincingly established.

There is 38 times more probability of developing mouth and throat cancer in people who smoke and simultaneously consume excessive alcohol. Similarly, both the habits are widely considered to be risk factors for cardiovascular and lung diseases.

Treatment of alcoholic smokers has not been addressed in a notable way. It is often considered impossible to make people abstain from consuming alcohol and also avoid smoking tobacco. However, recent experiments have shown contradictory results against this belief. There are several addiction treatment facilities providing a dual recovery program. Some useful procedures being followed during the course of treatment include nicotine patch therapy, meditation, counseling, naturopathy and yoga. However, there are still a lot of problems being encountered during the treatment. Treating alcoholic smokers with a history of depressive disorders has been found to be more difficult than subjects without any such history. During the treatment, subjects end up smoking surreptitiously so as to satisfy their desire to smoke. Hence, a lot of research and modifications have to be done in patients undergoing treatment for addiction to alcohol and tobacco.
