Defeating Addictions by Replacing Addictions, Head-On

October 25th, 2007

Do you have an addiction? First of all, before you answer that question…..what is addiction? I went online and looked up the definition, and I came across a lot of meanings. Wow, I was shocked. Basically, my favourite definition I found was this, “A behavioural pattern characterized by compulsion, loss of control, and continued repetition of a behaviour or activity spite of adverse consequences.”

Smoking, drinking, sex, drugs, chocolate, painkillers, etc. There is a lot of things that we can be addicted to, but, is that really a bad thing? What makes us addicted? Having too much of something can only mean one thing, we are not living balanced lives. Find the balance, fill your life with other things so that it will make it harder to fill it with the same thing all the time.

Let’s say you were addicted to junk food. Look at your diet. If you were to look at 100% of what you eat on a day to day basis, and 80% was junk food, 20% healthy food, it would only make sense to make minor changes. By that I mean have an extra healthy meal per day. Don’t worry about replacing a junk meal with a healthy meal, only focus on having the extra healthy meal. Your body can only take so much and eventually the equilibrium will again be found, you can only fit so much food in your body. All that is needed is one initial small change to put you on the right path, take the first step.

Addictions are hard to beat in many cases because people think they are hard to beat. Even when they do try to beat the addiction, they spend too much time focussing on the addiction. What keeps showing up? More addiction to the same thing. Try focussing on how to replace it. Finding ways to replace addiction can be fun and rewarding. Instead of being afraid of trying, be excited! Think of how brighter the future, and present, will be. Beating any addiction can be challenging, but think of how can be when you know you can face any challenge that comes your way, Head-On.
