How to Overcome Pain Pill Addiction

May 20th, 2007 |

Unfortunately, theres no easy way to beat an addiction to prescription pain medication. There are several different approaches that do seem to work, but it varies by person. What works well for one individual, may not be the key to success for another. For this reason its important that the person who is addicted to pain medication seek professional help to aid them in determining what course of action is best for them.

Obviously, regardless of the approach, there is one common denominator when it comes to ending an addiction to pain medication. The individual must learn to live without the medication. For someone suffering with chronic pain because of an illness or injury this can be the catalyst that causes them never to seek treatment. If thats the case its important to note that there are many effective pain relievers that dont bear the same addictive qualities as others.

Quitting cold turkey is usually an approach prescribed by friends and relatives who mistakenly believe that the way to beat any addiction is to simply stop. This is virtually impossible for anyone who is truly addicted to prescription pain medication. Instead, a doctor is likely to wean the individual off the medication slowly by decreasing their daily dosage until they are no longer taking any at all.

This is obviously something that an addict would struggle to do. That is the reason why many people who are serious about ending a pain pill addiction will be prescribed a medication to help ease the symptoms of withdrawal. Patients who are under this type of treatment are closely monitored.

Although it is possible to overcome such an addiction in a home environment, for many individuals the process is simply easier if they are admitted to a rehab center. There they can find the support they need to overcome the psychological dependency. Another crucial benefit to a rehabilitation center is that the individual is able to go through the process of being weaned off the medication under the supervision of trained personnel. Obviously in a rehabilitation center they arent going to be able to feed their need for medications because of the restrictive nature of the conditions.

Support is likely the most crucial aspect of getting over an addiction of any kind. Those closest to the person facing the addiction would serve them well by learning all they can about this type of addiction and what they can personally do to aid in recovery. Although anger and disappointment are common emotions in those who know the addict well, its important to show belief in them. Overcoming any type of addiction is an admirable thing to do and that should be celebrated.

Good post! Sorry to side track your thread but I’ve got a couple questions. My partner is finishing up an ebook and is looking for places to sell it. Would you be interested in featuring it here? Would you sell ad space? It might be a cut of sales or maybe a view-based model. I’ll let you two discuss it as its not my ebook. I’ll pass along this blog. Stay cool.
